Simple Installation of Sugar onto a Flash Drive
OLPC Sugar Zain Mobile Dongle Connection Sugar on a stick Install Mirabelle install onto flash drive using linuxThe idea of sugar on a stick as I understand it, is that any child who has sugar installed on a flash drive stick is not confined to any particular computer, but can take sugar with them and use it on any computer.
To get sugar on a usb flash drive using WINDOWS, you just need three things:
i)Preferably a virgin USB flash drive like kingston ,lexar or some other brand , but with at least 2Gig of memory
ii)The file which in simple terms will be used to install sugar onto a stick called soas-2-blueberry.iso
get soas-2-blueberry.iso here
Note: sugar has improved and has been modified, the file has been nicknamed " Mirabell "you can use Mirabelle instead of the file above if you want get Mirabelle here:
get Mirabelle here
iii)A utility programme which will be used to install the soas-2-blueberry.iso onto the stick called liveusb-creator-3.9.1-setup.exe
get liveusb utility here
1)
Firstly download the two files needed i.e liveusb-creator-3.9.1-setup.exe and soas-2-blueberry.iso onto the desktop as in the screen shot left; the Icons show that both the files liveusb-creator-3.9.1-setup.exe and soas-2-blueberry.iso have downloaded and are ready to use.
After you have done this left click on the icon with a large "f" This will start the file to install and you should get the next window coming up as in the next screen shot right(go to 2)
3)
After the file is installed a small box will come up, stating "Do you want to run the installer now? "like this screen shot
Since i like an uncluttered desktop, and like to see what i'm doing , as well as doing things in my own time, I clicked the button "NO"now go to 4)
5)
This is the start window to install sugar on a flash drive; at this point we need to select the file to install and set the right target path to the flash drive we want to install sugar onto.
When this window came up for me it listed a default flash drive letter as "F" but is that the right drive letter for the virgin flash drive ? Not trusting my computer Hal on these occasions its best to check ! Leave this window open, but go to start "My Computer "this will show all drives including your flash drive assuming you have inserted it into a free usb port
See screen shot 6
7)
Here it can be seen that the flash drive is now correctly listed as E (Lexar) instead as F as in the above screen shot. I had already selected the iso file and clicked install. As can be seen during install the window lists its progress as it installs , and there is a progress bar at the bottom. When it gets to 100% as shown here the installation is done.
Just close the box, and then reboot to start sugar from the stick; you may have to tweak the boot up options to make sure along with booting from the main drive your computer can also boot from a stick
.2)

This window states live usb creator , but really for all intents and purposes it actually is a live sugar installer since it installs sugar onto a stick
The small window should bring up a default destination folder to install the programme, which here is C:\Programme Files\LiveUSB Creator\. This is fine so just left click on the install button, bottom right of the small window. Now go to 3)
4)
After that with the desktop a bit clearer the installer can be run simply by going to start> programmes > liveUSB creator> liveUSB creator (with f ) as per the screen shot photograph left.
Running the installer then brings up the window as in screen shot 5
6)
You can see here that I have gone to My Computer and the left side of the screen shot is showing my "Flash, or Pen Drive " as they are sometimes called is a Lexar brand listed drive E.
So back to the Fedora liveUSB creator window and left click the downward arrow of the target device section, make it shows " E " in my case, or whatever drive letter it shows for you in My Computer after you have attached your flash drive to a USB port.
Next we select the iso . We just left click on the browse button , until we see the iso file listed. In my case its on the desktop so, i followed through from browse button , click on Desktop to see a list of items, including the iso and left click to select it. Now go to 7)
