Reggae music in Ghana by Solomon Awity

Solomon Awity - One of the up and coming reggae artists in Ghana

As a land rich in culture and tradition, Ghana is heading forward to being one of the best African Nation producing quality reggae music.

It is believed that most of the predecessors of the current slaves finding themselves in the Caribbean islands had their roots from Ghana.

This thereby resulted in the large number of typical Ghanaian languages such as Akan and Ga being found in their mother language called "patois".

An example of a such a Ghanaian derived word is chaka-chaka, which in the native Ga language means untidy, messed up or disarranged; which has the same meaning in the patois.

Obeah is also derived from the Akan word "obeyie " literally meaning oba yie ie ... One believed to have come on this earth with great gifts such as foresight, power to heal and also to destroy as well.

There is also a great link with Ghana to a sect in Jamaica called the " bobo-ashanti". The word "Ashanti" is actually a name of a tribe which all Ghanaians and Africans are familiar with; the centre of the region where Ashanti's (also sometimes spelt Asante) derive from is Kumasi.

The Ashanti region is an area steeped in history and even fairly recently was the centre of battles with the British.

It is has told by ancients that the former kings of Ashanti land were all dreadlocks bearded men ruling their land with might and with fear of what they called "the gods"

They remained in this tradition till the age of colonialism when shrewd colonial masters came with guns and dissembled the empire;they shaved the Ashanti kings and later sent them off to exile in the Seychelles.

The reggae music in Ghana is mostly associated with Rastafarians and though it carries great message and sends out much inspirational words, few or I must say little is being done to make it the reigning category in the country's music scene of Ghana

Recent chat with Reggae lovers in Ghana here shows that places of recreation for Reggae fans are very few and even places noted for these purposes do not really meet up to the expectation with the increasing appetite of the youth and old for reggae music

I think the country is on the verge of becoming the continents most toughest Reggae site. On the front line of the Reggae scene are artists like blakk prophet of mama Africa fame, chizzy wailer, kwadjo Antwi, Shasha Marley,Fiifi Sailor, Bandana ,Black R asta and Samini; all of these trying their best to project the country's reggae music.

The most fascinating thing about the country of Ghana is the large number of youths who are into reggae music ; the recent estimation shows that there are about 2000 youths in the Accra area alone with only with about 75 percent on dreadlocks all looking for chances to explore their talents

Producers, show organizers and managers are therefore called upon to visit this great country and invest into her reggae life; one unsigned afro reggae artist named "kwesi bibini" a.k.a okodie(eagle) says it will do much good than harm to all Africans
