Internet Connection with Zain Mobile Broadband USB Dongle with PC

Connecting to the Internet using a mobile broadband dongle should be easy, but with Linux the operating system can sometimes be a bit coy when trying to set up a connection! On several occasions the writer has attached the a Zain Mobile Dongle to a usb port and a new connection wizard menu came up straight away; on other occasions nothing happens which is when a newbie to Linux might be in trouble getting a connection.

If you get the wizard, just follow instruction from 2) , if not start from 1)

1) From the menu of Ubuntu or an Ubuntu derivative such as Mint, go to system> preferences > network connections, you will then see the box left

2)Left click on the mobile broadband tab; it may be blank or there may be other entries such as in this instance. You may for instance have used your laptop in the UK, you may have even used a Zain dongle in South Africa, thus the Zain entry but it will will not work in Ghana so you will need to set up a new connection. To tidy things up you can delete the old entries.Left click the + ADD button , which will take you to the next connection box,

This box is the one that often appears as soon as you have attached a mobile dongle to a free usb port. Its self explanatory left click on the forward button, gets you to the next instruction box

Use the scroll bar to find Ghana and left click on it, then in the bottom section of the instruction box left click Zain, then left click the forward button and you will get a summary connection box, left click apply, then close the connection wizard by left clicking the close button on the bottom right.

4) Back to the desktop, at the top in the panel of Ubuntu, there is an Internet connection icon, here it shows there is no connection. Left click the icon and a Zain entry should be listed, left click on the round radio button next to the Zain entry, and the computer should then connect.
